Second printing, in the second month of publication. Uncommon signed. This book won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing. Brooks was editor-in-chief of Houghton-Mifflin, and in that capacity alone was a great champion of environmental writing. As Rachel Carson's editor, he suggested the title Silent Spring, and he later wrote a book about her. But Brooks was also an accomplished naturalist writer himself, and here he describes his visits to about fifteen wildernesses and wilds with his wife, especially in the United States to places like the (classic) Concord River and the Olympic Peninsula, and many other National Parks, but also to a few international locations. Illustrated by his own skillful sketches. Green cloth, red top stain.
