The Headmaster: Frank L. Boyden of Deerfield (inscribed by Boyden)
NY: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1966. First edition. Hardcover. McPhee's second book, inscribed to no recipient by the subject of the book on the front free endpaper: "We did enjoy your visit and hope you will come again soon. Best wishes, Frank Boyden." McPhee spent a fifth (postgraduate) year of high school at Deerfield before heading to Princeton and it made lifelong impression on him. Here he circles around to describe Boyden as "one of the greatest headmasters in history." Octavo in green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. A 35-page section of black and white photos at the rear of the book. Very good with light rubbing spine ends and corners and an extremely faint, small dampstain at the top of the rear jacket that is really only revealed because its evident on the dust jacket, which is very good also with two creases across the rear flap and a a little wear to upper corners. Near Fine / Very Good. Item #2275
