On Puget Sound (inscribed to Edward S. Meany with two letters)
NY: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1929. First edition. Hardcover. A nice association copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To my friend Professor Edmond S. Meany, from Robert Walkinshaw." Also laid in are two letters, the first dated 1929, the second 1930. Meany was a distinguished professor of botany and history at the University of Washington (its first professor of history), a state legislator, and a well-known naturalist and outdoor enthusiast. He was the longtime president of the Mountaineers, a climbing club, and collaborated with the Sierra Club on conservation issues like the fight to protect Hetch-Hetchy. Among his books are History of State of Washington and Mount Rainer: A Record of Exploration. A mountain in Olympic National Park is named in his honor. Walkinshaw is best known for this book, a study of the region, including an emphasis on Mt. Rainer and Mt. Baker. His first letter, two pages longhand, conveys the volume, noting "Maybe there are some thing here you may not wholly like, and I shall be in for a scolding, but I give you the book anyway in memory of the many hills we have climbed together." The second letter, one-page typed, thanks Meany for reviewing the book in the club's newsletter The Mountaineer. Octavo in green buckram with gilt lettering stamped to front and spine. Very good with rubbing to spine ends and a streak of light wear or a faint tidemark along the lower edge of the front board (no evidence of dampstaining on the interior). An excellent Pacific Northwest association copy. Both letters fine, the first folded once, the second folded into sixths in its envelope. Both letters about fine. Very good. Item #2272
