An association copy, inscribed on the title page, at his home in Oregon: "May 11, 1988, Finn Rock, For Carter Burden, with my very best wishes, Barry Lopez." Burden (see his New York Times obit) was a New York City councilman, a Vanderbilt heir, and one of the world's most prominent collectors of books, assembling 80,000 items, a number of which ended up at the Morgan Library and Museum. This is Lopez's third book, which won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing. A wide octavo in gray cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Near fine with a hint of sunning to edges and toning to page edges. One minor bump to top edge of the front board. In a very good jacket with some rosy discoloration to rear panel.
