Practical Forestry: A Treatise on the Propagation , Planting, and Cultivation, with a Description, and the Botanical and Popular Names of all the Indigenous Trees of the United States . . .
NY: Orange Judd Company, 1884. First edition. Hardcover. An early, quite handsome book on the cultivation and preservation of forests in the United States, with the latter two-thirds of the book devoted to descriptions of all indigenous tress and some exotics. Fuller was a horticulturist on Long Island and in Brooklyn. Of note, the first long chapter is "Influence of Forests on Climate" in which Fuller links forests with human and ecological health, discussing for example rainfall patterns and moisture retention, and also argues against the draining of swamps. Duodecimo in dark brown cloth with gilt and stamped stamped illustrations, gilt lettering to spine. Light green patterned endpapers. A very good copy with the front hinge starting and rubbing to margins, a little more wear to cloth at spine ends and some mild staining to top of the rear board. A lovely book with an early conservation ethic. Very good. Item #2212
