The Paris of Appalachia: Pittsburgh in the Twenty-First Century (inscribed to Annie Dillard)
Pittsburgh: Carnegie Mellon University Press, 2009. First edition. Paperback. An association copy, inscribed on the title page: "For Annie [Dillard] -- Thank you for your words on the back of this book and everywhere else, too. Brian O'Neill." With Dillard's bookplate on the verso of the front wrap. Dillard provides the first blurb on the rear wrap: "Brian O'Neill is a wonderful writer. He analyzes perfectly Pittsburgh's unerring habit of screwing itself. He loves all the right stuff. I loved this book." Laid in also is a note from O'Neill on Pittsburgh Post-Gazette stationary conveying the book to Annie via an assistant or helper, as well as a copy of his daughter's annotations on a section of Dillard's An American Childhood, which is about growing up in Pittsburgh, for a class assignment. O'Neill is a longtime columnist for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and other papers and has won several award for journalism in Pennsylvania. A fine copy in pictorial wraps, and an excellent Pittsburgh association copy. A hardcover first edition copy of An American Childhood is included (not yet depicted). Fine. Item #2204

More about the book:
"This isn't so much a history of Pittsburgh as it is a biography. Sometimes we're so afraid of what others think, we're afraid to declare who we are. This city is not midwestern. It's not East Coast. It's just Pittsburgh, and there's no place like it. That's both its blessing and its curse."
