Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1915. First edition. Hardcover. Later printing, without the year of publication on the title page. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To F. J Roach, Enos A. Mills." Uncommon signed. Mills was a prominent early naturalist instrumental to the establishment of Rocky Mountain National Park. Here he writes about the Rockies in Colorado more generally. "I have visited o foot every part of Colorado and have made scores of happy excursions through these mountains," he writes in the preface. "These outings were in every season of the year and they brought me in contact with the wild life of the heights in every kind of weather." Chapters were mainly first published in periodicals. Octavo, brown buckram with color vignette on front board, illustrated monotone endpapers. Illustrations and photographs accompany every chapter. Index at rear. Very good with rubbing to spine ends and corners, bumping to spine ends. A light bump and browning to top corner of a run of interior pages. "Illustrations" page with a stamp in purple ink at bottom: "Property of the Advertising Dep't. Union Pacific Railroad Co., Omaha, Nebraska," and indeed this allows us to ascertain that F.J. Roach was an advertising agent and then manager for Union Pacific. An interesting example of how Mills's writing promoted tourism. Very good. Item #2191
