Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1917. First edition. Hardcover. An association copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Will H. Hays who appreciates the place which National Parks have in National Life. Enos A. Mills." A nice inscription, and uncommon signed. Hay was the manager of Warren G. Harding's successful campaign for President and then his Postmaster General. He would go on to become the first President of Motion Pictures Producers and Distributors of America. Enos Mills was a prominent early naturalist instrumental to the establishment of Rocky Mountain National Park, and here he describes seventeen Nationals Parks in depth, an others including National Monuments and Canadian National Parks in brief. "I have tried to describe a few of the wonders of the Parks and to suggest the larger, fuller use of them," he writes in the preface. "Surely, these wonderlands mean much for the general welfare, and will help to develop greater man and women -- to arouse enthusiasm for our native land, and for nature everywhere." A special chapter on John Muir. With 100 pages of "detailed information for tourists" by Laurence F. Schmeckebier to finish. Octavo, brown buckram with gilt lettering and color illustrations to front board. With photographs throughout, maps, and index at rear.
