Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1919. First edition. Hardcover. Inscribed on the illustrated front free endpaper in Mills's usual location: "To Reginald Robinson, Enos. A Mills." Uncommon signed. With Robinson's book plate dated 1919 (the year of publication), with his NYC address, on the first blank. Laid in is a small prospectus pamphlet for the book. Enos Mills was a prominent early naturalist instrumental to the establishment of Rocky Mountain National Park. The Grizzly draws on 30 years of encounters with grizzlies in their habitat. "I have trailed the grizzly without a gun," he writes in the preface. "I have repeatedly been outwitted by him, but never has he attached me. I have not found him ferocious, and I consider him in most respects the greatest animal on the North American continent, if not in the world." Ten new chapters and five previously published elsewhere. Octavo, brown buckram color vignette illustration on front board. Illustrated endpapers, and black and white photographs by various photographers. Very good with some dark mottling/soiling to outer edge of front board and rubbing to spine ends and corners; a little softening to lower corners. Very good. Item #2189
