Up and Down California in 1860-1864 (association copy)

An uncommon book--the only first printing on the market as of this writing--and an association copy, with the ownership signature of Joseph Milliard on the pastedown. Milliard (1857-1945) was the curator of ornithology for the California Academy of Sciences and wrote extensively on the birds of the state. He authored books including The Handbook of the Birds of Golden Gate Park, San Francisco and Birds of the Bohemian Grove, as well as an autobiography. The pastedown additionally with the later address label of Warren Yeend of the U.S Geological Survey, who published on placer mining in the Sierra. This book is the journals of William Brewer during his time as the chief botanist of the California Division of Mines and Geology (today's California Geological Survey). He was handpicked by Josiah Whitney for the role. He later became the Chair of Agriculture at Yale's Sheffield Scientic School. Published posthumously and edited by renown California climber-writer Francis Farquahar. Octavo in navy blue cloth with gilt letting to spine. Frontispiece photo of "The Field Party of 1864" that includes Brewer. A very good or better copy with a little rubbing to spine ends and corners, a minor bump to lower rear board. In a custom slipcase. Laid in are three newspaper clippings, presumably collected by Yeend, about Brewer and Mt. Brewer, the peak named after him in the Sierra.
