Kansas City: Sheed Andrews & McMeel, 1977. First edition. Hardcover. Wonderfully inscribed the year after first publication on the title page: "For Thom -- whose pleasure with these stories is the reason they are here -- along with the others, they hold the universe together. Barry." Lopez's telling of North American indigenous Trickster Coyote mythologies based on his extensive research (presented in a bibliographic essay at the rear). His second book. Most of the stories are just two to three pages, and Lopez notes in his introduction that he's taken the license of "rewriting, translating, and adapting" these tales to eschew the stiff language of translation and make them more accessible to a modern audience. A very near fine book in blue cloth with just a touch of sunning to lower board edges; corners sharp, pages clean and crisp. In a very good jacket with light sunning to spine and general edge wear, including to spine ends. Near fine / Very good. Item #2166
