A paperback original, inscribed in the year of publication on the epigraph page (following the copyright page): "8/14/94, Terry Shade 50th Birthday, 'Best wishes on the second 50' and good fishing, Frank C. Craighead, Jr." Scarce signed, and Frank Craighead's signature seems scarce in general. Craighead is a wildlife biology and conservation legend along with his brother John J. Craighead (and their sister is Jean Craighead George, the famous writer of nature books for youth such as My Side of the Mountain). They got their start in bird biology, but are renown for their pioneering 12 year study of grizzly bears in Yellowstone--the first use of radio transmitters to track wildlife--and for creating the Craighead Environmental Research Institute in 1955 "for the protection and study of wildlife and wilderness" that was influential in particular in shaping the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. Frank and John built identical cabins in Moose, Wyoming (where they associated with Marjory and Olaus Murie) and were listed among Audubon magazine's 100 conservation heroes of the century in 1998.
