The Snow Leopard (inscribed to his lawyer)

NY: Viking Press, 1978. First edition. Hardcover. An association copy, inscribed on the half-title page in blue ink: "For Dick Ader, with many thanks and warmest regards, Peter." Ader was Matthiessen's lawyer, working at Greenbaum, Wolff & Ernst in Manhattan where he also served other writers such as Eudora Welty and was the executor for artist Joseph Cornell's estate. This book, about a Zen trek alongside biologist George Schaller, won the Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction and is a classic of environmental writing. A very near fine copy with just a touch of nudging/sunning to spine ends and  a few small spots to the top edge of the text block. In a near fine, price-clipped jacket with a light crease at top fo spine, a little toning to the top of flaps, and several light creases to flaps. A handsome copy. Fine / Near Fine. Item #2099
ISBN: 0670653748

"When Matthiessen went to Nepal to study the Himalayan blue sheep and, possibly, to glimpse the rare and beautiful snow leopard, he undertook his five-week trek as winter snows were sweeping into the high passes. This is a radiant and deeply moving account of a 'true pilgrimage, a journey of the heart.'"
