Beyond the Wall: Essays from the Outside (association copy)

NY: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1984. First Edition. Hardcover. An association copy, inscribed in the year of publication on the from free endpaper: "To Cynthia Farah, Edward Abbey, Tucson '84." Farah is a photographer and film critic and was a friend of many Southwest writers (among them also Cormac McCarthy). Notably she included Abbey in her photography book Literature & Landscape: Writers of the Southwest (1988), and a fine/fine signed copy of that book with her portrait of Edward Abbey is included here (Abbey opens that book as the first author, since it's arranged alphabetically). Abbey's inscription predates that project. Farah went on to direct the film studies program at the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) and has published other books documenting El Paso. This book is a collection of essays largely gathered from four earlier large format "picture books" done in collaboration with well-known photographers, which is fitting considering Farah is also a photographer. A near fine book with just a little rubbing to lower board edges and one small bump to lower edge of the rear board. In a fine jacket. Near fine / Fine. Item #2085
ISBN: 0030692997

"In this wise and lyrical book about landscapes of the desert and the mind, Edward Abbey guides us beyond the wall of the city and asphalt belting of superhighways to special pockets of wilderness that stretch from the interior of Alaska to the dry lands of Mexico.".
