The Philip Johnson Tapes (inscribed to Chuck Close)

An association copy, inscribed on the half-title page in the year of publication: "To Chuck Close, with best wishes, Bob Stern, Nov 2008." Uncommon signed. Also laid in is a typed letter signed (TLS) dated in 2008 from the interviewer Stern to Close presenting the book and finishing with "I hope you will enjoy our conversations as much as I have enjoyed reliving them in the course of preparing them for publication." Philip Johnson (see his NYT obit) is the groundbreaking modernist and postmodernist architect known, above all, for Glass House, and he was the first architectural director at MOMA in NYC. He was an early mentor to Robert A.M. Stern, and they maintained a close association. Stern found Robert A.M. Stern Architects, aka RAMSA, was the dean of the Yale School of Architecture, and among other honors received the Driehaus Architecture Prize. Chuck Close is of course the celebrated contemporary painter, one of the most famous of our times, known for his large-scale photorealist and pixilated portraits (his most expensive painting sold for $4.3 million at auction in 2005). Among numerous accolades, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Art by Bill Clinton. A tall octavo in photo-illustrated boards, very good with a little rubbing/scratching and one bump to the lower edge of the rear board. Without a dust jacket as issued. Very good. Item #2083
