Scott Momaday, wrote the five-page foreword, in which he begins: "David Grant Noble writes out of an extraordinary fund of knowledge and experience. He is a man of learning, perception, and spirit, and these elements coalesce in to an authority that is remarkable." Noble (see his biography) lives in Santa Fe, as Momaday did, and is known for his books on Southwest history and archaeology. He's received the Victor Stoner Award from the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society and the Emil Haury Award from the Western National Parks Association. This book "represents the culmination of David Grant Noble's forty-ear career as a fine arts photographer and writer," 75 black and white images of Southwest locations and views along with his personal reflections rich with history. Images depict indigenous sites, dwellings, and pictographs among other views from places such as Comanche Gap, Gila Cliffs, Canyon de Chelly, Rinconada Canyon, Gailisteo Basin, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Horseshoe Canyon, Cedar Mesa . . . the list goes on. N. Scott Momaday was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for House of the Rising Dawn in 1969 and a key figure of the literary Native American Renaissance.
