The Ascent of the Grand Teton in 1898 (association copy, inscribed)

The American Alpine Journal / Privately Printed, 1939. First edition. Softcover. An association copy, handsomely inscribed at the top of the front free endpaper: "To Evelyn Runnette, with the regards of a fellow-climber on the Grand Teton, Francis P. Farquhar." Scarce signed. An offprint from The American Alpine Journal, Vol. III, No. 3, 1939, about the first authenticated ascent of the Grand Teton, led by Frank Spalding. Evelyn Runnette (see this tribute from the American Alpine Club) was an early woman in climbing, the 21st person (of any gender) to climb all of Colorado's 14,000-ft peaks and the first female member of the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame. A neat association as such. Farquhar was an accomplished mountain climber, environmentalist, historian of California, bibliographer and fine press bibliophile. His History of the Sierra Nevada is a classic book, combining all of his interests, and there's a mountain named for him in Kings Canyon National Park. He also served for several years as the president of the Sierra Club.  10 pages in gray, staple-bound wraps including one glossy plate of black and white photos. Very good with some sunning to edges, mainly, and a light crease through the upper corner. Very good. Item #2073
