Game Birds & Mammals of California: a laboratory syllabus
Berkeley: California Book Company, 1951. First edition. Spiral bound. Revised 1956. A "laboratory syllabus" for A. Starker Leopold's Zoology 116 "Introduction to Wildlife and Fisheries Management" class at UC Berkeley. Essentially a workbook that students were asked to use and mark up during a weekly lab in which they handled specimens, furs, and skins. As he writes in the introduction, "The effort has been to present a general picture of wildlife in the country as a whole with special focus on the California scene." The emphasis is on animals managed for sport or otherwise. For each species, he describes its range and habitat and provides more free form "remarks," which are a unique window into his understanding of each animal. The oldest son of Aldo Leopold, A. [Aldo] Starker Leopold was an important wildlife biologist and conservationist who for thirty years a professor in the Zoology, Conservation, and Forestry departments at UC Berkeley. His books Wildlife of Mexico and The California Quail were both winners of the Wildlife Society Publication of the Year Award. Green paper covers, spiral bound. 128 single-sided pages including a bibliography at rear. Text and illustrations on rectos only with an occasional range map on versos. With pen-and-ink plate illustrations by Gene M. Christensen. A very good or better copy, seemingly unused but with a few pencil marks, with a hint of creasing/bumping to corners and light crease to the lower corner of the rear cover. A neat glimpse into A. Starker Leopold's pedagogy and knowledge of California wildlife. Very good. Item #2041
