Under the Mountain Wall: A Chronicle of Two Seasons in the Stone Age (inscribed)
NY: Viking, 1962. First edition. Hardcover. Notable for a relatively chatty inscription on the half-title page, uncommon from Matthiessen: "For Libby + Blake, The last Stone Age peoples may have gone by the time you read this -- I hope not -- Best, Peter Matthiessen." This is the second issue with the insert of pages at the conclusion of the book. His chronicle of the Harvard-Peabody Expedition to New Guinea, profiling the Kurelu tribe. Black cloth, illustrated map endpapers. Near fine with just a little wear to lower corners, but with a generic bookplate affixed to the dedication page to apparently cover up some writing, thus very good; in a very good jacket with wear to corners, mainly the upper, and a little wear to spine tail. Very good / Very good. Item #2038
