An association copy, and a nice pairing: The uncommon uncorrected proof of Gander's Pulitzer Prize-winning collection inscribed on the title page: "For you Larry & for you Meryl in deep friendship & love. -- Forrest." The recipients were poets Larry Rafferty and Meryl Natchez. Include also is a signed broadside featuring Gander's poem "Son," the first poem in Be With, which Rafferty printed via his hit & run press. This is one of 25 signed copies. "Son" is addressed to his son and is at the same time an elegy to his mother, Gander's wife, the acclaimed poet C.D. Wright ("When she spoke, when your mother spoke, even the leashed / greyhound stood transfixed. I stood transfixed.") The first section of Be With is about this loss, the second section about the US-Mexico border, and the third section about the his mother dying of Alzheimer's. Gander is one of our most accomplished contemporary poets, also the winner of a Whiting Award and a Guggenheim. The proof is about fine in wraps; the broadside is fine on textured beige paper with three uncut edges.
