"Brachiating" is a neato verb specific to primates: to move by using the arms to swing from branch to branch. The late Birute Galdikas was the third of the "trimates" that included also Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey. All three were mentored by Louis Leakey, and together they "revolutionized primatology," as the New York Times says (see Galdika's obit). Galdikas first journeyed to Borneo in 1971 to study orangutans in remote regions and brought them to the attention of the world with an article in National Geographic in 1975. She continued to study and advocate for orangutans throughout her life, and Reflections of Eden is her essential memoir on the subject. With a long blurb by Jane Goodall on the rear of the jacket that calls it "an unforgettable book written by a remarkable woman."
