Berkeley: Heyday Books, 2002. First edition. Hardcover. Signed by both Snyder and Killion on the title page, and inscribed by Killion: "For Peter & Celia, with best wishes & many thanks for all your work to preserve California's open spaces." The recipients were Peter and Celia Scott of Santa Cruz, Peter a professor of physics at the university and Sierra Club activist, Celia an environmental attorney who was especially devoted to the preservation of the Central California coast and the Santa Cruz greenbelt and later served as the city's mayor. Snyder and Killion both had an interest in Santa Cruz (who doesn't), and they once collaborated to produce a benefit broadside "Santa Cruz Pogonip" (Pogonip an alternate name for the greenbelt) to aid in the preservation of open space there. Probably Celia and Peter Scott were involved in that very campaign. Germane to this book, in 70s Peter was involved in the Sierra Club campaign to stop The Walt Disney Company’s proposed development of Mineral King, a subalpine glacial valley, which instead became part of Sequoia National Park. This book is the first trade edition of a book that Killion printed under his Quail Press in a  limited edition of 90 copies. His full-color woodcut prints with Snyder's poems and Sierra journal entries, as well excerpts from John Muir's journals. A stunning production. Snyder and Killion went on to produce two follow up books in this vein about the California coast and Mt. Tamalpais. An oblong quarto, coffee-table style, in beige textured paper boards. Very good or better with the upper corners bumped, one spot of rubbing to one of the lower board edges, and a touch of wear to the outer edge of the front pastedown where the front free endpaper may have adhered once. Still lovely, and pages are crisp. In a very good jacket with that same corner bumping. A nice California association all around
