Our National Park Policy: A Critical History (association copy)
Baltimore: John Hopkins Press, 1961. First edition. Hardcover. An association copy, inscribed on the half-title page in the year of publication: "Autographed by the author for my good friend Dick Sheridan, John Ise, March 24, 1961." Uncommon signed, and uncommon book in general. Sheridan was Ise's colleague and a fellow history professor at the University of Kansas, with a specialty in the history and economics of the Caribbean. According to Ise's papers, Sheridan wrote a memorial to Ise entitled “John Ise, 1885-1969, Economist, Conservationist, Prophet of the Energy Crisis." Ise was a beloved and much lauded economist and professor (see his Map of Kansas Literature page) and this book was his third on conversation, following (much after) United States Forest Policy (1920) and United State Oil Policy (1926). "This book is a skillful narrative of the political and administrative struggles that through the years have created the [National Park] system we enjoy today." Also written on the half-title page is the ownership (it seems) signature and address of Gerald A. Smith, another economics professor, suggesting the book was passed down, and on the verso of the page is a list of "People who might contribute to a book on John Ise" that includes Gerald Smith, probably in Sheridan's hand. Octavo in green cloth, 700 pages with index. Good with rubbing to corners and spine ends and with tape marks to both endpapers. Also foxing to the top face of the text block. The jacket, which is a little short, is good with foxing to edges and more tape marks, and it's taped to the illustrated map pastedowns. Good / Good. Item #1959
