The recipients are former US Senator from California John V. Tunney and his wife, Olympic skier Kathinka Osborne. As a Senator, his focus was on anti-trust and environmental legislation, especially the Noise Pollution Control Act of 1972. Shockingly, he lost his seat after just one term and did not return to politics, but was active in other ways, including as an environmentalist. He served on the board of the Dutcher's nonprofit advocacy organization Living with Wolves and lived in part in Sun Valley, Idaho, where the Dutchers are based.
