Decade of the Wolf: Returning the Wild to Yellowstone (inscribed to US Senator John V. Tunney)

Guilford, CT: The Lyons Press, 2005. First edition. Hardcover. Second printing. An association copy, not signed by the authors but with a compelling non-authorial inscription on the half-title page: "To John and Kathinka -- Thank you for showing much interest in wolves. Our best and with love, Jamie & Jim [Dutcher]." The Dutchers are prominent wolf experts who famously documented a pack in a 20-acre sanctuary for six years beneath the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho, producing Emmy Award-winning documentaries and many books, including for National Geographic. The recipients are former US Senator from California John V. Tunney and his wife, Olympic skier Kathinka Osborne. Tunney was a Democratic star, close friend of Ted Kennedy, and the model for the political comedy The Candidate starring Robert Redford. As a Senator, his focus was on anti-trust and environmental legislation, especially the Noise Pollution Control Act of 1972. Shockingly, he lost his seat after just one term and did not return to politics, but was active in other ways, including as an environmentalist. He served on the board of the Dutcher's nonprofit advocacy organization Living with Wolves and lived in part in Sun Valley, Idaho, where the Dutchers are based. Douglas Smith is the foremost Yellowstone wolf expert and Gary Ferguson is prominent and prolific environmental writer who has won a Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award, a High Plains Book Award, and the Sigurd Olson Nature Writing Award among others. This book is about the ten years following the reintroduction of wolves in Yellowstone. Blurbs by Rick Bass, William Kittredge, Bill McKibben, and L. David Mech among others. With an insert of color photos at middle. A near fine book with very slight spine lean; in a near fine jacket with a little edge wear. A unique book uniting wolf biologists and a Senator devoted to the environment, and uncommon signed by its authors. Comes with a signed/inscribed hardcover copy of the Dutchers’ book Wolves at Our Door: The Extraordinary Story of the Couple Who Lived with Wolves. Near fine / Near fine. Item #1949
