Sierra Album (inscribed to Francis Farquhar)
Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1971. First edition. Hardcover. A compelling association copy, inscribed at the top of the illustrated map endpaper: "To Francis Farquhar, with warmest appreciation, Paul Johnson." The book is "a spirited account of man's attempts to explore, conquer, and conserve The Sierra Nevada," a pictorial history with more than 270 photographs and maps. One imagines that Farquhar influenced this book in no small way. He was an accomplished mountain climber, environmentalist, historian of California, bibliographer and fine press bibliophile, His History of the Sierra Nevada is a classic book, combining all of his interests, and there's a mountain named for him in Kings Canyon National Park. Farquhar also served for several years as the president of the Sierra Club. Johnson wrote books about California history and national parks and was previously the editor of Sunset Books. A very good book, quarto, in light green cloth with a dark green spine; a slight slant to spine and one hard bump to top right corner of front board, otherwise only a rubbing to spine tail. In a very good jacket with wear to corners and spine ends, including a short/tear chip to spine crown. A nice association. Very good / Very good. Item #1940
