An association copy, inscribed by the then Governor of Oklahoma Brad Henry on an official Governor's office bookplate affixed to the front free endpaper: "To Scott Momaday -- With deepest appreciation and admiration. You made the inaugural festivities wonderful. Kim and I look forward to your return to the Gov's Mansion. Brad Henry." Henry served from 2003 to 2011 and is, as of this writing, the last Democratic governor Oklahoma elected. A nice association, as N. Scott Momaday is one of Oklahoma's brightest literary lights. He won the Pulitzer Prize for House of the Rising Dawn in 1969 and was a key figure of the literary Native American Renaissance. He received the National Medal of Arts in 2007. That same year he moved back to Oklahoma for the first time since childhood and Brad Henry named him Oklahoma’s Centennial Poet Laureate. Probably this book was a gift on that occasion (”inaugural festivities”). Momaday was also inducted into the Oklahoma Writers Hall of Fame in 2008. This book is a photo essay showcasing some of the state's best natural and historic highlights by Fitzgerald accompanied by an essay by former OK Governor George Nigh. The state's "Indian Territory" and indigenous heritage is featured richly in the mix (the half-title page, for instance, is a detail of a Kiowa cradleboard--Momaday was Kiowa). Fitzgerald's original Oklahoma was published in 1979. Quarto, black leatherette boards, color photos throughout. A fine book in a very near fine jacket with a few small stipples to rear. A standout book for any Oklahoma or landscape photography collection. Fine / Near fine. Item #1926
