The Birth of the National Park Service: The Founding Years, 1913-33 (association copy)

A nice association copy, inscribed in the year of publication on the front free endpaper: "To Kenton Miller, In appreciation for your fine work as a leader in the conservation movement and to protect and support national parks all over the world. Bob Cahn, Horace M Albright, Dec. 1985." The inscription is in Cahn's hand but Albright has signed his name, which is uncommon. Kenton Miller was an important environmentalist on a global lvel, serving as director general for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for five years among other roles with the organization and other conservation groups. He is described as "a mentor to many conservationists around the world." Across his career, he helped establish three national and is the author of Planning National Parks for Eco-Development in Latin America. (See a more extensive biography for the IUCN by his wife, Sue Miller, also an environmentalist). A particularly nice association as such. Horace Albright was the second director of the US National Park Service, and much could be written about his accomplishments and how he steered the NPS; he was awarded a Presidential Medal for Freedom. He was 95 when this book was published and died two years later in 1987. Thus likely scarce signed by him in any edition (what you see, instead, is copies signed by his co-author ["as told to"] Robert Cahn, who won a Pulitzer Prize in journalism for reporting on the National Park Service). With blurbs by Alfred Runte and David Brower among others. A near fine copy with a touch of dust soiling to the top face of the text block. "Personal Library of Kenton R. Miller" stamps on the outer face, the FFEP, and the title page. In a very good jacket with some staining to spine, wear to corners, and a one-inch tear to base of spine
