Tainter is a prominent anthropologist, historian, and professor in the Department of Environment and Society at Utah State University who has written widely about sustainability, climate, and energy, especially as it pertains to the Southwest. Among other books, he's the author of The Collapse of Complex Societies, which explored the Mayan and Chacoan indigenous civilizations, and more recently Drilling Down: The Gulf Oil Debacle and Our Energy Dilemma. A nice association between prominent anthropologist-environmentalists as such. Nabhan is known in particular for his writing on Indigenous populations and ethnobotany in the Southwest and is a winner of the John Burroughs Medal for nature writing and a MacArthur "Genuis" Grant among many other honors. This book "uncovers surprising convergences between the landscape, ecology, ethno-geography, agriculture, and cuisines of the Middle East and the binational Desert Southwest," which Nabhan is particularly poised to do as a Lebanese-American.
