Seven Arrows (inscribed by N. Scott Momaday to his dad)
NY: Harper & Row, 1972. First edition. Hardcover. A touching association copy, with a significant non-authorial inscription on the page: "For Dad, with love and best wishes for Father's Day, 1972. Scott." From the library of N. Scott Momaday, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for House of the Rising Dawn in 1969 and a key figure of the literary Native American Renaissance. He received the National Medal of Arts in 2007. His father, Al Momaday, was an artist and illustrator who he collaborated with on books. This nonfiction-novel was described as "the first book about the ancient Ways of the Plains People to be written entirely by an Indian," but controversy over Charles "Hyemeyohsts" Storm's status ensued, perhaps because of the ceremony he shared publicly in the book. Storm is of mixed descent and maintains that he was born and raised on the Northern Cheyenne and Crow Reservations of Montana, but his status with those tribes ultimately wasn't clear. Nonetheless, this book was very well received by critics. Laid in is a publisher's sheet with blurbs, including from Momaday: "I thank the author and everyone concerned from the bottom of my heart for this rich and rewarding book, so beautiful in text and illustration. . . . It is a powerful creative work that fill s us with wonder again at the wisdom and complex satisfying philosophies of the Indian Americans." Blurbs also from Alvin M. Josephy, Jr., Dee Brown, and Peter Farb. The book indeed is wonderfully designed and full of historic and contemporary photos and art, largely in sepia, but with color plates interspersed. The first in a Harper & Row series by Native American authors. A fine book in white cloth with silver lettering, one very minor bump to outer front board edge; still fine. In a fine jacket.
