Gregoire was the 22nd Governor of Washington, serving from 2005-2013, and as this novel is set in Puget Sound, where Guterson lives, the association doesn't get a whole lot better than this. Gregoire was the state's Attorney General and Director of Ecology previously. Snow Falling on Cedars is set on the fictional San Piedro Island in the Sound and details, in the wake of World War II, a Japanese-American who is accused of murdering a fisherman. His first novel after a collection of stories. The book won the prestigious PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction was made into a major motion picture in 1999. A fine book in fine jacket.
