An Anthropologist on Mars: Seven Paradoxical Tales (inscribed to Senator John D. "Jay" Rockefeller]
NY: Knopf, 1995. First edition. Hardcover. Fourth printing. An association copy, inscribed in a bold blue marker on the title page: "For Senator Rockefeller -- Oliver Sacks, 5/97." The recipient is John D. "Jay" Rockefeller IV, former US Senator from West Virginia. He served 40 years in the Senate as a Democrat, where, relevant to this book, as part of his legacy he was a strong champion of healthcare and, in particular took a special interest in the fight against neurological disease, including Alzheimer's. He and his family founded the Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute (BRNI) in 1999 by Rockefeller and his family to help advance medical and scientific understanding of brain diseases. Sack's An Anthropologist on Mars profiles in depth seven neurological patients, "travellers to unimaginable lands," and ultimate "provokes anew a sense of wonder at who we are." A nice association as such. All seven essays collected here appeared either in The New Yorker or The New York Review of Books. With insets of color images and sketches. A fine, crisp copy in a very good jacket on account of a subtle square of offsetting on the front panel over the subtitle. Fine / Very good. Item #1862
