The Nature of Culture (inscribed)

Chicago: U Chicago P, 1952. First edition. Hardcover. Inscribed on the front free endpaper in the upper corner: "A.L. Kroeber with regards to Norman Zaichik." A scarce signature from the "Dean of American Anthropologists": we can locate no other signed copies of any book by Kroeber as of this writing. The recipient Norman Zaichick, a fellow anthropologist who wrote completed a dissertation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison this same year entitled The Influence of the Museums on American Anthropology, referencing Kroeber. The Nature of Culture is Kroeber's selection of his writings across fifty years on "culture and civilization." He provides introductions and commentary on each essay. Kroeber studied with Franz Boas before making his name at UC Berkeley where he became famed for his studies of Californian indigenous populations. A near fine copy in blue cloth with a slight rubbing/bumping to corners and spine ends, minor dust smudge to corner of lower text block face. In a very good, handsome jacket with some edgewear to those same areas and light sunning to the edges of the pale rear panel. A nice find. Near fine / Very good. Item #1820
