Uncommon signed, and an uncommon book in general. With illustrations by famed illustrator Thoreau McDonald. Her second book and her first work of nature writing, The Loghouse Nest is described as "a charming account of the author's special relationship with the birds and wild creatures who share her northern homesite at Pimisi Bay, near Mattawa, Ontario." de Kiriline Lawrence is often referred to as "Canada's Rachel Carson." Born in Sweden to a naturalist father, she was originally a nurse and emigrated to Canada after the death of her first husband, a soldier executed in Russia during WWI (she went to Russia as a nurse to search for him). After famously nursing the Dionne quintuplets (the first quintuplets known to survive, and the subject of her first book), she left nursing to live in a cabin in Ontario, where she took up writing. She was a decorated ornithologist and became the first Canadian woman to be elected a member of the American Ornithologist Union (AOU). She won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1969 for The Lovely, and the Wild. A near fine copy in mustard cloth with a touch of wear to corners; in a very good jacket with interior tape mending to short tears along the upper margins and spine tail (doesn't really seem necessary) and a little loss to spine ends and corners.
