Cooper was propelled into the spotlight following his infamous run-in with Amy Cooper (no relation) in Central Park, who submitted a false, racist police report about him after he confronted her about having her dog off-leash. His video of their encounter went viral. Cooper, who is openly gay, was then an editor at Marvel comics; he went on to write this book and became the host of the show Extraordinary Birder, for which he won an Emmy.
