An association copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Hal Scott, for years of great service to Mother Earth, with appreciation and thanks -- Nathaniel Reed, January 1985." An uncommon book in general and more so signed. Hal Scott was described by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel as "among the most influential leaders of Florida’s environmental movement for two decades"; he served as the president of the Florida Audubon Society and "in the early 1970s before such battles became fashionable, he fought offshore oil drilling, overly aggressive forestry practices, inefficient transportation and wetlands destruction." A regional preserve outside Orlando is named after him. Nathaniel Reed (see his NYT obit) was an important conservationist who lived in Florida from 1960 onward but, on the national scene, served as an Assistant Secretary of Fish, Wildlife and Parks for the Department o the Interior from 1971-1977 under the Nixon and Ford administrations. He is credited with co-writing the Endangered Species Act and leading the fight against DDT. He was also instrumental to the passage of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Clean Water Act, among other accomplishments. Here he and his co-author give a history and analysis of the Fish and Wildlife Service. The opening chapter includes a history of environmentalism in miniature before the FWS founding. Dennis Drabelle is an editor and attorney and was Reed's assistant at the Department of the Interior; his most recent book is The Power of Scenery: Frederick Law Olmsted and the Origin of the National Parks (2021). A near fine copy in blue cloth with faint, fine foxing to the upper text block edge (as is unsurprising for Florida), otherwise crisp. 163 pages with black and white illustrations and index.
