Jerry Schubel is a decorated oceans conservationist and for nearly twenty years was the president of the Aquarium of the Pacific, retiring in 2019. Among other activities and committee work, he served on NOAA’s Science Advisory Board and the Environmental Protection Agency’s Science Advisory Board. Sylvia Earle (b. 1935) is a standout marine biologist, oceanographer and explorer, often described as a Rachel Carson of the oceans. She has been a National Geographic explorer-in-residence since 1998, was the first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and was named by Time Magazine as its first Hero for the Planet in 1998. Among many, many other accolades, she has won the Rachel Carson Award from the National Audubon Society and the Carl Sagan Award for Public Understanding of Science.
