John Kieran's Treasury of Great Nature Writing (signed with inclusions)
Garden City, NJ: Hanover House, 1957. First edition. Hardcover. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To our good friend Dr. Michael J. Jordan, with best wishes to all the family. From Margaret and John Kieran, Rockport, Mass." The inscription is in Kieran's hand. Uncommon signed. With commentaries and biographies of all the included writers by Kieran. Ordered chronologically, it includes both classic and of mid-century writers, and is a nice glimpse of Kieran's colleagues and influences. Includes "The Long Snowfall" by Rachel Carson, who not surprisingly is one of only a few women in the book. Laid in at rear are two obituaries of Kieran (one from the New York Times) and a small note card in addressed envelope from his widow Margaret Ford Kieran (to whom the book is dedicated) in reply to a condolences note after Kieran's death; the note is penned on three sides of the card and describes Kieran's final condition and more. The recipient was the director of obstetrics and gynecology at the then St. Clare's Hospital in Hell's Kitchen. A very good book with the front hinge starting. In a very good jacket with some toning to interior, wear to corners, and a little loss/fraying to spine ends. Very good / Very good. Item #1711
