Uncommon and probably scarce signed as Dethier died in 1993, the year after publication. An exploration of the songs of Orthoptera--crickets and katydids---written as a companion to G.W. Pierce's 1948 classic Songs of Insects, this book won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1993. With a foreword by poet A.R. Ammons and drawings by Abigail Rorer. Dethier was a professor of zoology at U Mass Amherst and a pioneer in the study of plant-insect interactions. Blurbs by Roger B. Swain, Bernd Heinrich, and Noel Perrin, who writes: "Four or five to a generation, field biologists turn up who can write enchanting prose. Vincent Dethier is one of them."
