Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1971. Inscribed in the year of publication on the front free endpaper: "For Jane and Bill, with warmest regards, Paul, May 1971." Uncommon signed. His second book, following Roadless Area, which won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing. Brooks was editor-in-chief of Houghton-Mifflin, and in that capacity alone was a great champion of environmental writing. He was Rachel Carson's editor, suggested the title Silent Spring, and later wrote a book about her. In this book he describes six then-recent battles for conversation, focusing especially on Alaska, the Northwest, and Florida. The final chapter is a more general discussion, "The Conservation Revolution." With a color frontispiece photograph and many others, a majority of them by Philip Hyde, in black and white. A very good copy in blue cloth with some mild rubbing to corner and a few spots of very subtle soiling to cloth. Hints of foxing on title page and frontis. A couple minor smudges to FFEP. In a very good jacket with a few nicks to corners and some streaks of light rubbing along spine, but in very nice shape considering it's all white. Very good / Very good. Item #1665
