Pilgrim at Tinker Creek (association copy)
NY: Harper's Magazine Press, 1974. First edition. Hardcover. Second printing with number line on the final page to 2 (copies without the number line are the simultaneous Book Club edition), but signed within a month of first publication. An association copy, inscribed on the half-title page: "For Dorothy Montgomery Johnson, best wishes always, Annie Dillard, Hollins, Virginia, April 10, 1974." With her genuine signature which is rare aside her perfunctory, post-fame bookstore squiggle. Dorothy Montgomery Johnson was the head of the physics department at Hollins University, where Dillard earned her BA and MA, married her professor Richard Dillard, and quickly launched her luminous career with this classic of contemporary nature writing. Pilgrim won the Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction fiction in 1975. A very good copy with foxing to text block faces, light on top and bottom and more prominent to outer face. In a very good or better jacket with a few spots, toning to spine, and light wear to corners. A nice association between prominent women at Hollins
