Charles." Uncommon signed. An early book about species extinction, both over the epochs and at the hands of humans, and accessible to a juvenile audience. Charles Edmund Roth was a force in environmental education and coined the term "environmental literacy" (see his informative report for the federal Office of Education Research and Improvement, "Environmental Literacy: Its Roots, Evolution and Directions in the 1990s"). He spent his career working for the Massachusetts Audubon Society, including as the director of education, and also wrote 20 books. This book is his third. He was also an accomplished illustrator and wonderfully this book includes his animal illustrations in "A Gallery of Threatened Species" at rear. Black cloth with a silver illustration matching the jacket on the front board. A near fine copy in with a little bumping to spine ends; a few pages with some underlining and a few formerly dogeared pages. Previous owner's signature and date on the half-title page. In a good or better jacket with three one-inch tears and some resulting creasing. A rad jacket design, in our opinion--a new favorite. Near fine / Good. Item #1566
