Orr's first book, a paperback original uncommon signed, and a groundbreaking work that announced Orr as an important environmental thinker. As the rear wrap describes, "While a great deal of attention has been given to what governments, corporations, utilities, international agencies, and private citizens can do to help in the transition to sustainability, little thought has been given to what schools, colleges, and universities can do. Ecological Literacy asks how the discovery of finiteness affects the content and substance of education." The book includes a 25-page syllabus, i.e. reading list, at its center, which is wonderful in and of itself. Orr is an emeritus distinguished professor of environmental studies at Oberlin University, now a professor of practice at Arizona State University, and the author of nine books, including Hope Is An Imperative: The Essential David Orr from Island Press. In more recent years he's turned his focus to the fight against climate change. His many honors include a Bioneers Award, a National Conservation Achievement Award by the National Wildlife Federation, and a Lyndhurst Prize "to recognize the educational, cultural, and charitable activities of particular individuals of exceptional talent, character, and moral vision."
