The Changing Scenes in the Natural Sciences: 1776-1976 (E.O. Wilson's copy)

Philadelphia: Academy of Natural Sciences, 1977. First edition. Hardcover. E.O. Wilson's copy of this uncommon, and momentous, anthology born out of a symposium to mark the bicentennial of the nation and examine the history of American science and its explorations of evolution across that period. With Wilson's ownership signature at the top of the front free endpaper. As editor Clyde Goulden explains in a brief preface, "Our intent was to review the contributions of evolution, systematics, quantitative genetic, ecology, and sociobiology to our understand of the natural world. However, it should be clear to the reader that the book is much more than a review. The papers identify fundamental shortcomings existing within each discipline." Goulden also provides a longer contextualizing intro. Wilson contributes the essay "Animal and Human Sociobiology," and other notable contributors include Ernst Mayr, G. Evelyn Hutchinson, and Daniel Janzen. and Ruth Patrick. Pictorial cloth (neat iguana), a very good or better copy with some light bumping/rubbing to corners and fading to the lettering on spine. No dust jacket, likely as issued. A nice item on the history of science that shows Wilson's important place in it. Very good. Item #1558
