The Measure of Man (signed)
Indianapolis, New York: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1954. First edition. Hardcover. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Mr. [?] Peterson, on his birthday, with best wishes for many more happy ones. Joseph Wood Krutch, Tucson 1956." Winner of the National Book Award, and uncommon signed. Pitched as a follow up to his book A Modern Temper twenty-five years earlier, The Measure of Man "attempts to meet head-on the whole dismal complex of arguments and theories which try to prove that man is a machine," examining Darwin, Freud, and Marx and arguing an optimistic alternative. A very good book with light bumping to corners, light foxing to top edge of the text block, and faint offsetting to the front free endpaper and half-title pags.. In a good or very good jacket with wear to corners and spine ends, a few short tears, and offsetting to front flap. Krutch was primarily a critic until he moved to Arizona and began also writing about natural history, and a year before The Measure of Man he was also the winner of the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing. Very good / Good. Item #1555
