Columbia: U Missouri P, 1981. First edition. Hardcover. Inscribed on the sage front free endpaper: "For Jack and Jessica from two Ozarkers, Len Hall and his much better half." His better half then writes, "And may I add Virgina W. Hall." Uncommon signed. Hall's late collection of essays drawn from more than thirty years, including essays on the Ozark landscape and wildlife and others entitled "A Legacy of Wilderness" and "A Land Ethic," a nod to the influence of and his work with Aldo Leopold. Leonard Hall was a journalist and activist, little known now, but significant because he led the advocacy for the Ozark National Scenic Riverways that includes the Current and Jack Fork Rivers in Missouri--the first designation by the National Park Service of its kind in 1964, a precursor to the Wild and Scenic River Act by four years. He wrote about those rivers in Stars Upstream. (Aldo Leopold also helped in that conservation effort -- Leopold had a deep interest in Missouri and owned a shack on the Current River, which he visited annually for quail hunting.) Hall's papers are held by The State Historical Society of Missouri. Green cloth boards and rich with black-and-white photos by Hall and others including bird photography by Charles Schwartz. With a foreword by Howard F. Baer. A fine book, but with a hint of perfume; in a near fine jacket with a little toning and few minor abrasions to spine. Fine / Near fine. Item #1545
