NY: Knopf, 1962. First edition. Hardcover. Beautifully signed by Murie on the first blank, and scarce thus, especially in the first printing. An uncommon book in general. Murie's classic and her first book, it tells the story of her childhood in Alaska and then her wilderness adventures in the state with her biologist-husband Olaus as young adults. Olaus provides the illustrations. The Muries were pivotal in the wilderness movement (along with Olaus's brother Adolph Murie) and ultimately lived at the base of the Tetons in Moose, Wyoming--their home is now the Murie Center in the National Park. Margaret has been called "the grandmother of the conservation movement." A very good copy in green cloth with some light sunning or soiling to edges, cloth worn through barely at front lower corner. With the "Valley Shop , Jackson Hole" bookplate and address stamp (twice) of the former owner--Edwin Williams of Baytown, TX--on the front pastedown, as well as a non-authorial gift inscription to him at the top of the front free endpaper dated 1963. In a well-worn, good-only dust jacket that is tape reinforced and mended along the spine and has significant wear to flap folds. Chipping to spine ends, general soiling. But this book is scarce in the dust jacket and this one is original, dated "11/62" on the front flap; now protected under mylar. A nice find. Very good / Good. Item #1442
