White was a pioneering Black oncologist and Thomas's colleague in the field. White became the director of the Howard University Cancer Center from 1974-1976, and he was an expert on cancer in African-American populations and the disparity in rates aside White populations. White and Lewis's histories overlap by time spent independently at the Sloan Kettering Memorial Cancer Center in New York City where White was the first Black surgical oncologist to train at the institution (which was founded in 1884) and Thomas was the president from 1974-1980. A nice association copy between important oncologists. The Medusa and the Snail follows Thomas's National Book Award-winning The Lives of the Cell and takes inspiration from Montaigne, with many essays following Montaigne's title format of "Oh Disease," "On Natural Death," "On Meddling," to name just a few of Lewis's titles. A fine book in a very near fine jacket with just a little edge wear to upper spine. Fine / Near fine. Item #1419
