Of Men and Mountains (association copy)
NY: Harper, 1950. First edition. Hardcover. Presumed later printing with "E-Z" on copyright page. But a nice association copy, inscribed on the half-title page: "For Johsel Namkung, from his friend, William O Douglas." Namkung has been described as "the Northwest's preeminent landscape photographer of the latter 20th century." A Korean emigrant, he studied briefly with Ansel Adams but focused his work on more intimate landscape views that were highly influenced by his training in music. Early on in his career he collaborated with Ruth Kirk on several books about the Olympic Peninsula, and his last book, a retrospective, was published in 2012 a year before his death. Of Men and Mountains is Supreme Court Justice William O Douglas's account of growing up in and exploring the Pacific Northwest and it profiles many of the men who he encountered in these wilds along the way. Green cloth, gilt to spine. Illustrated map end papers of the Cascades and Wallowa Mountains. A very good copy with one stain an inch in circumference on lower left side of front board, wrapping onto spine just slightly. A few check marks in the margins. In a very good jacket rubbing to edges and a few chips at corners. An excellent association copy between artists intent on revealing and protecting the Northwest's landscapes. Very good / Very good.
