NY: Knopf, 1979. First edition. Hardcover. An association copy of this posthumous book belonging to Hal Borland's son, Donal. Laid in is an oversized publicity postcard addressed to Donal Borland in Michigan as well as a note from Hal Borland's second wife, Barbara Dodge Borland, on a Knopf card, reading simply: "Here is Hal's book -- Barbara." This posthumous collection of essays from his "nature editorials" in The New York Times was edited by Dodge Borland, who was herself a writer. Hal Borland was a prominent mid-century nature writer who grew up in Colorado and ended up writing especially about rural life and ecology in Connecticut by way time working in publishing in New York city. He won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1968 for Hill Country Harvest, and his and Barbara Dodge Borland's papers are held at Yale's Beinecke Library. A near fine book with a little soiling to board edges in a very good jacket with browning to spine, some minor scuffing and stains, and two small chips to spine crown. A standout association copy of this book which isn't found signed, being posthumous. Near fine / Very good. Item #1336
