Stamford, CT: Pushcart Press, 1986. First edition. Hardcover. Edward Abbey's copies of this fun project from the longtime editor the Pushcart Prizes, Bill Henderson. Two volumes, each with Abbey's ownership signature ("Abbey") on the front free endpaper and "Abbey" written on the bottom face of the text block. These books collect snippets from really cutting reviews, and at times the material is laugh-out-loud brutal. The reviews are listed by alphabetically by the author who is "taken down," and notably in the second volume Abbey is the lucky recipient of the first two entries: 1) On The Monkey Wrench Gang: "The author of this book should be neutered and locked away forever," writes the San Juan County Record; 2) On Abbey's Road: "If you want to read 200 pages of Edward Abbey's self-flattery buy this . . . smug, graceless book," writes The New Republic. Ouch, but good on Cactus Ed for having a sense of humor and keeping these books around. Small, matching octavos, each 93 pages, and each about fine in very good dust jackets with wear to corners and spine ends. A nice set and collectible--good reading, and a no-holds-barred, jester sensibility right up Abbey's alley
